Arthritis of the big toe is a common problem due to age-related degeneration ("wear-and-tear") of the joints. This causes pain and reduced range-of-motion at the base of the big toe. This is known as hallux limitus or hallux rigidus. (See Hallux Rigidus - Physiopedia)
One recommended therapy is the toe-pull exercise which stretches the joint's tendons & ligaments so the toe has more 'elbow room' to move around. (See Exercises to Help With Arthritis in the Big Toe - VeryWellHealth)
Joint distraction in general has been found to be helpful for various types of arthritis to improve range-of-motion, decrease pain, or slow progression of the problem. (See Joint Distraction for Osteoarthritis - PubMed)
ToeTugger helps with this stretch by providing steady traction to the big toe without the boredom or fatigue of doing the stretches yourself by hand.
If you did not receive specific instructions from your podiatrist or therapist, try the ToeTugger for 5-15 minutes as a warm-up before other toe exercises, before weight-bearing exercise, or any other time as part of a daily stretching regimen.
See instructional video below.
Do not use for more than 15 minutes at a time. If you have poor circulation in your feet or other conditions, check with your healthcare provider before using.
